If it were up to me, I’d spend 6 or more hours each day in God’s word.  Seriously.  It is that exciting to me.  There is so much there to learn and so much that displays future events and God’s glory.  It is a treasure hunt and I love it.  I’ve been studying the Bible now for over 25 years.  Because I have often been a stay at home mother, I’ve had more time than many and taken more time than most to read God’s word; so this isn’t a new venture for me.

I had the opportunity a few years ago while on a mission trip to speak to a group of prospective pastors – Biblical studies students – in Nicaragua.  I told them that I have a great education – two degrees – but that the most important book in the world to study is the Holy…

The River Walk's avatarTHE RIVER WALK

Heavenly Minded Earthly Good

The crowds asked, “What should we do?” (Luke 3:10)

Read: Numbers 26:52-28:15, Luke 3:1-22, Psalm 61:1-8, Proverbs 11:16-17

Relate: A while back I was eating at in a restaurant when from the booth behind me I overheard snippets of a conversation that caught my interest. Two guys who worked at the same place were sitting there talking about a third co-worker. That third guy was apparently a Christian. One of the two men said, “He’s practically a saint.” The other one replied, “I don’t want a saint. I want a good employee.” The conversation moved on but my mind rolled around that last statement. Since when did a good Christian not automatically equate with a good employee? Unfortunately, I’ve met a few examples that fit the bill. Even worse, I’ve been that example a few times in my past. I have heard the saying before, “He is so heavenly minded that…

These are such lovely words, often printed on encouragement cards and posters. But they are in a context that is seldom quoted.

I tried for years to read the Bible straight through, but I couldn’t. I always got stuck with Jeremiah’s words. I could relate entirely too much. Some people can pull themselves out of feeling godly sorrow by clapping to happy songs or waving banners or doing something equally distracting, but it feels a bit like the tail wagging the dog to me.

Sometimes it takes more courage to walk into powerful emotions than to walk into a line of guns and bayonets. It’s easier to pretend they don’t exist, to run away, to shove the shame that comes with having them…

Revelations in Writing's avatarRevelations In Writing

Be strong and courageous. (Deuteronomy 31:6a) The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. – (Deuteronomy 31:8)

No matter what lies before us, God goes in front of us. He provides our front line of defense, our rear guard, and surrounds us on each side. The Lord assures us that He will remain present with us, regardless of the circumstances that we are being called to walk through. If God is for us, whom shall we fear? There is nothing that He calls us to that He won’t also willingly equip and see us through. May we rise up with strength and courage, trusting that the Lord has gone before us, and will never leave us nor forsake us.

For we are each called,Bold in Battle

to rise up, be strong;

take…
