For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” Hebrews 8:12

Grace is what keeps us going when the enemy slams us to the ground. What’s even harder to deal with is the fact that often times we get slammed to the ground as a result of our own stumbling. The bruises we inflict on ourselves are often the most painful and hardest to recover from. This can be especially true when we fall as a result of the same sins, the same mistakes, the same bad choices on what seems to be a regular basis.

The enemy wants us to forget about grace. He wants to hold us down and keep us from getting back into the battle. What motivates us to pick ourselves up and try again when we know we have a good chance of failing once again? What keeps us from listening to the voices of guilt, shame and embarrassment?

For the football player it’s just plain determination. Ever seen a player get slammed to the ground by a person from the other team and bounce back up and make the play? His tenacity refuses to let the pain of being ‘taken out’ by his aggressor stop him from succeeding. He shrugs off the possibility of further attack and moves on.

For the football player it’s tenacity, but for us as Christ-followers it’s grace that keeps us going when the enemy slams us to the ground. It’s grace that soothes the painful bruises of every fall, heals the wounds of wayward desires and reminds us that we can succeed because of Jesus love and forgiveness. Grace is the source of courage for everyone who chooses to follow Christ. Grace is the lens through which our Father watches us.

The writer to the Hebrews reminds his readers that God continued to try to work with his stubborn people, but they continued to rebel, continued to ignore his pleas for relationship and continued to go their own way.

Then Jesus came and everything changed. Because of Jesus sacrificial death on the cross and his triumphant victory over sin and death, God can have the relationship he has always wanted with us. Grace seals us so that when we fall we can get up and continue on.

If you have stumbled in your walk with God. If you are afraid to get up and try again because you are sure you will just get slammed to the ground again, remember that God’s forgiveness not only takes away the guilt of poor, rebellious choices, it gives us the confidence and courage we need to have the spiritual tenacity to get up and get back in the ballgame.

Don’t let the enemies of guilt, shame, embarrassment and religion hold you down. Don’t listen to the constant reminders of your failures. The forgiveness you have in Jesus Christ empowers you to live victoriously. Remember that God looks at you through the perfect lens of Jesus’ forgiveness.

PRAYER: Father God, I thank you for grace. I praise you for the fact that because of Jesus I can be completely forgiven. Help me to live in the confidence and courage grace gives me to live life the way you want me to live it. Let grace empower me with courage in the midst of my stumbling. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. John 14:23

Imagine what it would be like if your favorite actor, athlete, author or some other public figure gave you a call and said something like, “Hey there, I’ve been thinking of you lately and was wondering if I could stop by your house for a chat?”

What would you do? Thank him profusely and tell him under no circumstances do you want to see him? Would you suggest that you meet him elsewhere, say a restaurant or coffee shop or your favorite burger joint? What if he insisted that he come to your house and that he would be there in an hour?

No doubt you’d look around and decide what could and could not be cleaned. You’d think about repainting or re-carpeting…but you don’t have time. You may even consider borrowing a neighbor’s house and telling your guest that he had the address wrong.

Once your emotions were somewhat under control you’d think of the people to invite, the food to serve…you still have time to run to the store for a few things. Over the span of the next 59 ½ minutes you would do everything in your power to have your home looking it’s best for your guest.

Take this story to a whole new level. Now imagine that your guest really isn’t coming just for a visit. He wants to move in. He wants the room down the hall and on the left and he wants to be able to wake up every morning to have a cup of coffee with you and chat about the day ahead! Oh, and instead of this guest being some admired public figure, envision this guest as being God instead of some famous public figure! Sound outlandish? It isn’t.

Jesus told his followers that he and his Father not only wanted a relationship with them. He wanted to live with them. Let that sink in a bit. The great God of heaven, the creator of the universe, the almighty, all powerful, all knowing God WANTS to live with YOU.

Now, you may think, how would I ever be able to prepare my humble shack for God? That’s the other beautiful part of this story. You don’t have to clean up to get ready for him. God wants to come into your home and do everything that needs to be done for him to dwell with you. How’s that for an Extreme Makeover!

You may be thinking, “I’m not worth all that”, and you are right. You aren’t. But God’s desire for you is based on his love for you, not on your worthiness to receive it. All he asks of us it to love him and show him our love by obeying his word.

PRAYER: Father God, I’m in awe to think about how much you must love me if you want to live with me. There are days when I don’t even want to be around me, but you always want to be around me. I pray that you would come into my home. Forgive me for the mess I have here. Empower me by your Spirit to show you my love through obedience to your word. Amen.

I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 1:19-20 (NLT)

Everyone has those times when they feel overwhelmed by the things before them. It may be a struggle with health, relationships, kids, finances or a whole boatload of other issues.

When we are under the stress of battle it affects every part of our bodies. Physically we get drained and weak. Emotionally we can get crabby, depressed or angry. We can start blaming others or ourselves. Spiritually we wrestle with doubts about God’s ability or desire to help us. We begin to lose confidence in ourselves and faith in others.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could be assured that you have the power you need to conquer every obstacle, overcome every enemy and solve every issue that is before you?

As Christ-followers we have all the power of God the Father at our fingertips. Imagine that! The same power it took to raise Jesus from death, roll the stone away like a pebble, calm the storm and create the world is all at our fingertips because of Jesus!

So, why don’t you feel the power? We feel powerless when we expect God to give us power according to what we see as our needs. However God gives us power according to his wisdom and power.

Think of him as a carpenter. You want your house (this life you are living) to be remodeled. You are tired of the way things are. So you ask him to change things.  But remodeling is never easy, never neat and never without pain.

With all the power of the universe at his fingertips, God wants to make you into a masterpiece. But to do that he needs to change you, to remodel you, to take the old and make you new. Don’t worry. He’s a master at creating something from nothing. Give him permission to show his power in your life. It may be painful at times, but the results will be stunning!

PRAYER: Father God, I thank you for your promise that all your power can be shown in me. I pray that you would give me the courage to give you full permission to change me into the person you want me to be. I know it will be painful and fearful at times, but I trust your creative wisdom to make me into something marvelous! In Jesus name, Amen.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9

In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve are described as being naked and yet feeling no shame. There is much more to that line than two nude people walking around in a perfect world. Their nakedness was much more than skin deep. They were naked in an emotional, intellectual and spiritual sense as well. Nothing was hidden from each other and there was no shame.

Then that dreaded piece of fruit appeared and nothing has been the same. Ever since that time we have struggled with acceptance. We struggle to feel accepted by others. We struggle to find acceptance with God in the midst of our weakness. Most importantly, we struggle to find acceptance according to the standards we set for ourselves.

We do all sorts of things to feel comfortable with ourselves. Some of us make a conscious or unconscious decision to remove ourselves from circles where we feel badly about us. We find that it works and remove ourselves more and more until we avoid people at all costs.

Others of us use external things to make us feel good. Some of these are harmful to our bodies like drugs, smoking, sex or extreme behaviors. Sometimes we can use ‘good things’ like religion, social action, philanthropy or volunteering to make us feel better. Whatever we choose to soothe our feelings of inferiority is short-lived and requires a ‘bigger dose’ to accomplish the task.

God suggests we use a different approach. The next time the voices in your head remind you of your inadequacy, tell yourself the truth. Do it out loud if necessary.

You were chosen by God to be his special possession. He chose you knowing all about your weakness, your rebellion, your poor choices, your hate and your anger. He saw every flaw in your physical, emotional and spiritual life. Still, in spite of all that, He loved you enough to purchase you with his most cherished possession, His Son, Jesus Christ.

Don’t listen to the voices that tell say you don’t measure up. That is a lie of the enemy. You are special. You are chosen. God loves you above all things. That’s grace!

PRAYER: Father, thank you for loving me. Like Adam and Eve I’ve spent most of my life trying to cover up the things I’m ashamed of about me. I’ve tried to use so many good and bad things to make me feel better about myself. Empower me by your Holy Spirit to live with the realization of how special I am to you. Help me to live free of the emptiness shame puts on me. In Jesus name, Amen.

You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound. Psalm 4:7

Every year it’s the same thing. People all over the world will gather together to cheer in another year of great, new hopes and expectations. They talk about the new opportunities before them, about how great everything will be, and, for a few moments anyway, forget the pain, the agony and the turmoil that surrounds all of us.

The unfortunate reality is that January 2 or shortly afterwards, reality returns. The credit card bills come in from the Christmas overspending, the health concerns worsen, relationships fail us and the political and economic turmoil goes on. Wouldn’t it be nice if ‘Happy New Year’ were a statement of promise and absolute truth and not a flippant statement of hope in the midst of despair?

Each one of us can have a Happy New Year. That may seem like a bold statement but happiness isn’t about what goes on around us. Happiness is based on what we put our hope on. If we put our hope in material things, or relationships, or religion or even physical health we are destined for disappointment and failure. Anything that is earthly based will fail to bring us true happiness because by its nature it is destined to deteriorate.

The Psalmist compares his happiness to the happiness of those around them. During the time this Psalm was written ‘grain and new wine abounding’ represented everything one could possible ask for in the physical realm. It was a statement that represented the most successful and prosperous things that could happen in the world.

True happiness finds its source on the inside of each of us, not in the fickle, external circumstances that surround us. As Christ-followers we can have peace in the midst of turmoil, wealth in the midst of financial despair, freedom in the midst of addictions because our peace, wealth and freedom come from our faith in Jesus Christ.

Think about it for a moment. As a Christ-follower what is the absolute worst thing that can happen to you? The person without Christ may say relational or financial or physical disaster or even death. But for the Christ-follower none of that really has a lasting impact. The ‘worst that can happen’ for most people (death) is the best that can happen for us because in the death of our physical bodies we get to be united with Jesus in heaven.

The guarantee of a ‘Happy New Year’ comes only when we put our complete faith in Jesus Christ and resolve to grow in relationship to Him. Everything we see, everything will fail, change or go away. Jesus never will. Have a Happy New Year in Jesus!

PRAYER: Dear Jesus, I thank you for the promise you have given me that you are with me in every situation. I confess that in my humanness I seek happiness measure success by what I can hold in my hand or see with my eyes. Empower me by your Holy Spirit to base my happiness on you alone and not people, religion or things. I praise you for your love and power to bring true inner happiness to me through your forgiveness and your Holy Spirit. Amen.
