But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57 (NLT)
Another great promise from the Word of God! We have victory! Everyone likes to win. But the reality is the Bible promises that we have victory over sin, yet we still struggle on a daily basis. For some of us our sins are the quiet, hidden sins of doubt, a critical spirit, worry or the desire for more.
For others of us, our defeats and failures are in the area of addictions, relational struggles, lust, anger and rebellion against God, our parents and anything that even looks like authority.
So where is this victory that the Bible talks about? Why do we still struggle with feelings of failure, shame, guilt and anger? Why do we continue to lose when we are supposed to win?
The fact of the matter is that it’s not about capability, it’s about execution. We are incapable as humans to defeat our sinful human nature. God knew that. That’s why He sent Jesus to die on the cross and that’s why 1 Corinthians says that we have ‘victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ’. So it was never intended that we’d win the battle on our own.
Take a sports team for example. We all know stories of highly favored teams that have gone up against an opponent of much lesser talent and ability. They lacked the big play guys, they were slow, and they just didn’t have a chance…on paper. But they came into the contest and soundly defeat the highly favored opponent. Why? In most cases it’s because the underdog did the little things it takes to win better than their highly favored opponent.
The same is true in the spiritual realm. We have all the power we need to soundly defeat the enemy. Jesus won the war, but we still need to fight the battles in order to see victory in our lives. We need to do the little things that will empower us to defeat the enemy.
Victory in life’s battles comes when we, as Christ-followers:
- Read the Bible on a daily basis. The more you read and the deeper you study the more power you will see come into your life. Start small. Even taking one verse with you throughout the day will be beneficial, but don’t stop there. Continue to press yourself to read more.
- Pray daily as well. Don’t look at prayer as some ultra-religious activity. It’s like talking to a loving father. Tell Him your fears, feelings and concerns. Ask Him to reveal himself through the Bible and others in your life.
- Fast regularly. Fasting has gotten out of vogue in recent years and is highly misunderstood by many. Fasting is NOT walking in agony for days on end because you are without food. Fasting is NOT the same as a hunger strike! It’s simply taking time, even one meal, away from food and your normal routine to spend some time with God.
- Fellowship with other believers. Some have stopped fellowshipping with other believers because they’ve been hurt intentionally or otherwise and see christians as nothing more than a bunch of hypocrites. Unfortunately there are many who have used their faith as a battering ram, inflicting great harm on others. Seek out sincere believers, even just one or two that will genuinely help you in your spiritual growth and offer accountability.
When we do the little things in our faith walk we’ll see our faith grow, we’ll be more able to endure the hard times of life and we’ll see patience and love towards others increase. Jesus has done the big things for us. He’s won the war. It’s up to us as individual Christ-followers to do the little things necessary to win the battles.
PRAYER: Father God. I confess to you that many of the struggles I have in life are a result of not doing the little things I need to gain strength and confidence. Please empower me, through your Spirit to read more, pray more, fast and fellowship with other Christ-followers so that I can win the battles in my life. Thank you that in Jesus I have the victory. Amen.
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
When we are infants we are totally dependent on our parents for everything from moving from one point to another, food and drink, entertainment, clothing and safety and protection. As we grew older we began to learn new things. The world became alive with new experiences, things to explore, activities to try. We begin to think that the world is a playground and that we are at the center of it. We are invincible!
But something happens along the way. We fall. We stumble. We get burned. We fail. In the midst of that learning something else happens. We begin to doubt. It could be because of critical parenting. It could be because we’ve begun to see ourselves as failures. It could be due to emotional or physical abuse. Gradually, without our knowledge or realization we begin to realize we aren’t invincible. We are not the center of the universe. Where we once thought anything was possible, life teaches us the cruel lesson that perhaps nothing we desire is possible. We lose our dreams, our focus, and our ability to see ourselves as successes.
During those times of self-defeat God says. STOP! I am with you. I, the creator God of the universe. The One that holds the stars in my hand and dictates where the clouds go and the rain falls. The one that sees every bird that falls from the sky and every fish in the sea. I am with you. I am not near you. I’m not within calling range. I’m not merely available. I AM WITH YOU.
Because I am with you I will help you. I will walk by your side to see that you prosper. I will walk by your side during the dangerous, scary, disappointing, frustrating times of life. I’ll help you when you fall. I’ll applaud your successes.
It’s not about you anymore. It never really was. It’s about me. It’s about the fact that you can’t (never really could) do it on your own. It is by my strength that we will walk life’s journey together. Don’t be afraid. I’m here.
Live life today with the realization that you never ever walk alone. Your heavenly Father is yearning to uphold you in anything you do. During your successes and failures. During your rebellion and your times of need. He is there.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father. When I think of all you have done for me. When I realize that you have walked with me, by my side through everything. I am in awe. I don’t understand why you have allowed some things in my life. I’m thankful for other things. I ask that in everything I will sense your presence and love today. You are truly an awesome God. Amen.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. Isaiah 43:2
The fairy tales of old all have a familiar ring to them. They all start ‘once upon a time’. It doesn’t matter when they started or took place or where. They started. That’s all that needs to be known. The other thing that rings true is how they end. ‘They all lived happily ever after.’ The tyrant or big, bad wolf, or wicked witch all vanished. The flowers grew, the birds sang and life was good. Forever.
As children, perhaps one of the reasons we loved fairy tales so much was that they give us a glimpse of life that we know, as adults, will never really happen. Wolves win sometimes. Wickedness doesn’t just go away. Giants still roam the land and the walls of our unseen prisons seem inescapable. Fairy tales gave us hope that someday things will work out. Our dreams can be attained. Miracles will happen.
Isaiah 43:2 gives us a more realistic view of how life happens and what we can expect. There will be waters to pass through. The original languages describe this water as ‘deep water’ such as an ocean. There will be rivers to cross. Rushing, rock smashing rivers that threaten to tear our boats apart. There will be fire. Consuming fires that have no regard for the sanctity of life or the treasures we possess. Fire destroys everything.
But along with the horror Isaiah describes comes hope. When the Israelites were trapped at the edge of the Red Sea. And Pharaoh’s army was closing in. And there was no way out, no hope, nothing left to do but surrender and hope for the best. God made a way through the deep waters. He took a hopeless situation and brought His people through it.
When Israel needed to cross the mighty river Jordan to enter into the land promised them long ago. God parted those waters. The rushing torrents were silenced. He delivered His people safely through to dry ground.
When Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were thrown into the fiery furnace for refusing to give into an evil world system. Innocent as they were and following God’s law to the letter, their fate was sealed by an evil king bent on proving his power. Yet when the King looked into the furnace he saw the impossible. The men were walking around in the midst of the flames. When they were released, they didn’t even smell of smoke!
Three lessons. Three examples of life’s attacks. The open attack of an enemy. The barriers to our dreams. The attacks when we are innocent. They each come into our lives. We were never promised that we would not see adversity and calamity in our life time. We were promised that in the midst of the most violent circumstances our Heavenly Father will walk us through. He loves us. Even in the direst of circumstances He will see us through.
PRAYER: Father God. I thank you for the promise you made that my life is completely and totally in your hands. Today I have many worries and concerns. It seems like my enemies are surrounding me. Sometimes I think I’m my own worst enemy! Help me to trust you in the midst of the trials of life. Thank you for loving me. Amen.
This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live. Deuteronomy 30:19
God is pro-choice. Not in the way some people would like to think. His definition of pro-choice goes far beyond the abortion controversy. God’s version of pro-choice has to do with everything we encounter in life. Moses says, “This day…” and it’s a reminder that every day, when we first open our eyes we choose. We choose between life and death, between blessing and cursing.
We have no choice but to choose! To choose between blessing and cursing means that our daily life will either be a blessing to those we come in contact with or a curse. It’s our choice. Paul adds to that when he says in Romans, “So much as is possible live at peace with all people.” Like Moses he’s telling us that every day we must choose to live peacefully with others to the best of our God-given ability.
When we are abused we have the choice to bless through forgiveness or to curse through hatred.
When we are disappointed in God or others we have the choice to bless through contentment or to curse through growing bitter.
When we suffer injustice we have the choice to bless by accepting the decision or to curse through growing bitter.
When we go through broken relationships we have the choice to bless by taking responsibility for our part and moving on or curse by living in shame and regret.
When we others let us down we have the choice to bless by trusting or the curse of accusing them before all the facts are out.
When we choose to bless, it doesn’t mean we agree with the other person. When we choose to bless it certainly doesn’t mean we condone what they have done to us. When we choose to bless we release our own bondage to the person so that the free life of Christ can live through us. Blessing always brings life. Cursing always brings death. Blessing enables us to live in freedom; cursing forces us into bondage. Blessing means I realize who I am as a Christ-follower; Cursing means I’ve forgotten what it means to be a child of God.
Humanly speaking, we don’t have the strength to take the actions to bless on a daily basis. We need to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit for that. But we do have the power to choose! When we choose to bless we choose life not only for ourselves but for others and life is freeing! All of heaven is watching you today, to see which you choose!
PRAYER: Father God. I ask that today I would be a blessing to those around me. I choose life over death. It is so easy to curse through words and actions and so hard to bless when others are so selfish. I ask that you would empower me through your Spirit to see ways in my life to be a blessing and impart your life to others. Amen.
