Where can I go to get away from your Spirit? Where can I run from you? Psalm 139:7 (NCV)

The internet has given us a new level of anonymity. Never before in history has it been easier to be ‘someone you are not’. It’s easy to hide your identity on social networking sites and be whoever you want to be. Want to be a 14 year-old girl, rather than a lonely 30 something male? There’s an app for that!

But hiding behind false identity isn’t something unique to the internet age. We’ve been hiding ever since Adam and Eve ate that forbidden fruit. Hiding from others and God isn’t new, we just think we’ve gotten better at it.

We can on a different face for each situation. We have our parent face, and our student face. We have a face we put on for our customer at the counter and a face we put on in the break room. We have a face we put on when we demand our own way and a face we put on when we’ve been humbled by our mistake. We humans have much more in common with the chameleon than we may want to admit.

Not only that, our enemy, the great Satan is the master of disguises. He puts on the face of religion to guide us away from the truth. He puts on the face of accusation to keep us defeated. He brings the face of worry into our lives to take our focus off God’s redeeming love and the protection of his Grace.

We fight the battle for ourselves on two fronts. On the one hand we can have so many different faces we struggle to keep them straight. Some of us have been using so many faces to hide behind we eventually forget who we are. We lose ourselves in a myriad of identities, none of which bring us the peace we seek.

On the other hand we fight against an enemy intent on bringing us to our knees in failure, agony and defeat. He uses people to remind us of our weakness and bring doubt into our lives. When necessary he uses his best weapon and infiltrates our minds with all sorts of lies about God, about whom we can trust and who we can’t, and most importantly, lies about the grace God offers us through Jesus Christ.

It is in the midst of this battle for ourselves we can find solace in knowing that our heavenly Father pierces through the darkness of deception to show us the light of his truth. The Psalmist reminds us that there is nothing hidden from our Father. We can’t hide behind some false identity, nor can we be deceived when we rely on his wisdom.

As one writer puts it, “We may elude the vigilance of a human enemy and place ourselves beyond his reach. [But] God fills all space—there is not a spot in which his piercing eye is not on us, and his uplifted hand cannot find us out.”

In the midst of the battle for who we are there can be a sense of urgency to get answers, to know the truth, to gain the victory. But our God is not governed by time. His victory is inevitable. His grasp of our needs is sure, he understands our weaknesses, his grace is sufficient for us.

Where can you hide from his presence? You can’t. Even if you wanted to. He sees every one of your faces. Better still, he knows the real you and is passionately in love with you.

PRAYER: Lord God, I thank you and praise you for filling every void in my life. There are so many dark corners of my mind that I run to hide in. It’s comforting to know your light penetrates even the darkest of places I go to. Protect me today from the lies I tell myself and the lies others try to make me believe. In Jesus name, Amen.

[To my friends at OCC, the next couple days are review of points we talked about on Sunday for the benefit of my other Blog readers and those who weren’t able to be with us. Have a blessed week.]

When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. Isaiah 43:2 (NLT)

The Lie: My Distress signals God’s Disgust

In the battle for peace of mind, the enemy tries to get us to believe the lie that the struggles we go through in life are somehow the result of God’s hatred of us. Because of our sin and refusal to obey God sends all sorts of terrible things our way to punish us. Some have linked natural disasters, plagues and political upheaval to God’s anger and vengeance. Make no mistake about it sin has an effect on nature and the events of our lives. However, we often mistake God’s silence as God’s disgust or anger rather than the natural consequence of sin.

The rules God has put in place for us aren’t some unplanned system of meaningless rules. They are there for a reason. God hates sin, but not sinners. God doesn’t hate people living a gay lifestyle, but he is opposed to the activities involved in that lifestyle. God hates divorce, but he doesn’t hate people who are divorced. God hates abortion and murder, but he doesn’t hate the people who are involved in abortion or murder. God loves people unconditionally, but because of his holiness can’t allow sin to be any part of his relationship with us.

There is a thing we call conviction of sin by the Holy Spirit. When we as Christ-followers sin, the Holy Spirit guides us towards repentance so our relationship with God can be restored. True peace of mind comes when we change course by confessing our sin, asking forgiveness, and changing our mindset towards that sin (repentence).

When the enemy reminds us of sin he does so in order to cripple us, to keep us defeated and living in guilt. Once we have asked Christ to forgive us of our sin we no longer need to feel guilt. We are free. Forgiven!!

When we are going through tough stuff in life we must learn to trust God. We have to remember and live in the truth that God is, in essence, love. Even if we don’t agree or understand why he does what he does his actions are based on unconditional love for us. Secondly, we must believe we are forgiven. Satan loves to remind us of our faults long after God has forgiven them. Placing false guilt on the believer is one of his favorite weapons. Lastly, remember that God is sovereign. That means that absolutely nothing can happen without his knowing about it and allowing it to happen.

You may have done something terribly wrong. You may be feeling guilt right now for mistakes of your past. You may even be living with life-long consequences for what you did years ago. Remember that even though you may be living in the consequences of sin God has forgiven you. He promises to protect and comfort even during those times. Living in the consequences of sin doesn’t mean you aren’t forgiven. Notice the verse for today. The words are not “If you walk through deep waters, but when. You will suffer struggles. You will have things to endure. You will feel distant from God from time to time. That doesn’t change the fact that he is there for you.

Truth Statement: God forgives the penalty for our sin and strengthens us through the consequences.

PRAYER: Father God, I’m being constantly reminded of things in my past that I know you have forgiven. The enemy continues to trouble me with thoughts of my failure and rebellion towards your ways. I hereby claim the freedom and peace of mind that comes from your forgiveness. With the power of your Spirit I refuse to listen to Satan’s lies about this. Thank you for your love. Amen.

Long ago the Lord said to Israel: “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself. Jeremiah 31:3 (NLT)

The two areas that Satan attacks the most in our walk is our faith in God and our faith in ourselves. He knows that these two areas of our lives will dictate how we address everything else in our lives.

If we are confident in who we are and comfortable with ourselves then the attacks other people place on us will fall harmless by our side. If, on the other hand we see ourselves as weak and worthless people even the smallest ‘stones of attack’ will pierce our armor.

What it really boils down to is this question, a question we must ask ourselves every day as we get up and get ready for the tasks ahead: “Who do you see in the mirror?”

We all want to succeed in whatever endeavor we pursue. We want to be respected. We want to be liked. We may not need to be filthy rich, but it would be nice to at least have enough money in the bank account to buy food, make the house payment and own a car that can be counted on to get you from point A to point B with the least amount of turmoil. All these things influence how we feel about ourselves if we listen to the enemy instead of listening to the truth of what God says about us.

Here’s the lie that Satan wants you to believe. When things get tough. When you fail to conquer that temptation…again; when you fall to the seduction of lust; when you miss another house payment; when you explode in a flurry of words at your wife, your boss or your kids, he gently and quietly whispers in your ear.

“You did it again didn’t you. You can’t beat this. You are worthless. You will never amount to anything, you realize that don’t you? Then, here’s where he really gets you. He quotes scripture. He’s not above that you know. He did it with Eve. He did it with Jesus Christ himself! And he never uses it in context. He quotes just what he things you need to hear.

“Even the bible says your worthless. Remember Isaiah 64:6? God says you are nothing but filthy rags. Worthless. Smelly. Of no value at all. That’s you.”

Then, he leaves and you get to pick up the pieces. Wounded. Doubting your abilities. Ashamed. Embarrassed. You resolve to be done. You won’t try anymore. The pain of failure is too great.

Until we have a firm grasp of who we are we can never fully access the power of grace. Think of grace as a verb, not a noun. Grace is God’s unending, passionate love for you 24/7. Read Ephesians 2:1-10. Read it carefully. See the promise. You WERE dead, but now you are ALIVE. Your life isn’t based on your actions. Your life if based on Jesus Christ and his work on the cross. God’s view of you is based on Jesus’ actions, not yours. Jeremiah 31:3 tells us we are loved with an everlasting love. Romans 8 tells us that NOTHING can separate us from that love.

Here is the truth Statement we need to base the view from the mirror on: We are loved unconditionally. Period. The Creator God of the universe loves you. He’s more concerned about your future than your past or present. He’s willing to take a chance on you. In his eyes not only ‘will you amount to something’, you already are something.

PRAYER: Father I’m tired of listening to Satan’s lies about myself. I’m tired of the feeling of dread I get every day I climb out of bed. I’m tired of feeling like a failure to you and those around me. Empower me with your Spirit to see myself as you do, through the lens of Jesus Christ. In his name I pray, Amen.
