We live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7

Faith is believing in something even though we can’t see it. Some say they have no faith but we all have faith so some extent.

In the physical life:

  • We believe in wind because we see the leaves moving for no apparent reason. But we know about wind. We can’t see it. We can feel it on our faces and see its results. Therefore, I have faith that wind exists.
  • We believe in ‘chair-ability’. We see a chair. We’ve experienced chairs before. We know by faith from our previous experience that when we sit we will be upheld.
  • We believe in wet. We can’t see wet. But we know when we touch water that wetness happens.

To say we have no faith implies we have had no experiences because faith is often learned by experiences.

The same is true in the spiritual realm. We can’t see God. We have His word to show us His actions through history. Actions that can be verified by historians, scientists and other scholars. We see his actions in creation and when we look into the skies. Living by faith is a decision to accept what we know to be true and applying it to life even when we can’t see it.

I live by faith, not sight when finances are tight and God says He’ll provide. I take the necessary actions to make wise choices. I live to the level of my ability and realize that money and possessions aren’t what life is about.

I live by faith, not sight when the doctor’s report isn’t good. I believe that my God is Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals. I know that my health is in His hands and that He knows what is best for me. No matter what the doctor says, I know my spiritual health is more important than my physical health. I trust Him to take care of me.

I live by faith, not sight when the relationship I thought would last for my entire life ends. I know that in God’s eyes it’s not so important why it failed or how it failed. What’s really important is that I come to Him for healing, knowing I’m forgiven and that He can still use me no matter what.

I live by faith, not sight when the political scene contradicts God’s law. I know that my sovereign God is ultimately in control of all things. Because He is in control, when the political scene grows worrisome I will stand in the face of adversity and walk all the more closely to Him for protection, guidance and wisdom.

I live by faith, not sight when the justice system fails me. I know that the unfair things of life are here only to make me stronger. I will work within the system for change and accept, as God’s will, when things don’t go my way.

I live by faith, not sight when God says I’m forgiven. It doesn’t matter what others say. It doesn’t matter how others treat me. It doesn’t matter how many times others bring up the mistakes of my past. I know my Redeemer lives. I know that He has forgiven me and there is nothing anyone can do to change my relationship with Him.

PRAYER: Father, it’s so easy to think about faith and so hard to live it. There are so many things in my life that scare me right now. So many doubts; so many feelings of inadequacy; so many questions about what is right and what is wrong. Life is so confusing. I ask that today you would help me to grow in my faith as I experience Your presence in my life. Amen.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)

What are the marks of Spiritual power? For some it may be doing some great miracle or seeing the signs of the Holy Spirit being manifest. We admire those people who can stand up strong and oppose the false values and the lies of the enemy. We dream of being able to dump the whole dump truck of the Gospel on people, denouncing their sin, warning them of their eternal damnation and showing them, in no uncertain terms, that they are the devil’s tool!

Others may say that spiritual power is seen in ‘spiritual disciplines’ of prayer, Bible Study and living a holy, set-apart lifestyle. These are the prayer warriors and the scholars of our day. They spend hours and hours in study and prayer and draw insights from God’s Word that we marvel at.

Is one of these better than the other? Shall we strive for one above the other? In some ways they seem opposites. One (power) is openly visible and extrovert-ish. But power, taken to extremes, tears apart, destroys and loses its regard for human feelings and emotion.

The other (self-discipline) can be taken to the extreme and become withdrawn and loses touch with society. In its extreme it can lead to legalism and a judgmental spirit.

But Paul adds the perfect ingredient to bring power and discipline together: Love.

It is love that helps us to realize that God’s word is true and that His Son Jesus is the only way to peace and forgiveness while here on earth and eternal life with Him after we die.

It’s love that reminds us that we are His most special creation. We are made in His image for His glory so that we can reach out to those around us that are in pain and despair.

It’s the love of the Father that caused Him to send His Son, Jesus, to the Cross to take the penalty for my sin, to offer me forgiveness, and to give me the power of the Holy Spirit for daily living.

It’s love that helps me to be patient and gentle with those who continue to follow their own destructive ways. It keeps me from attacking them through constant reminders of their sin and drives me to my knees to pray that God will lead them to repentance.

Love. The perfect cement that binds the truth of God’s word and the power of His Spirit to show the world that Jesus is the answer to the pain that they bear.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father. I thank you today for the many blessings you have given me. I thank you that through your Holy Spirit I can be brave in my speaking out for you. I thank you for your Word that gives me the wisdom to see the lies of the enemy and the truth of Your word. I ask that you would help me to add the cement of love to my life so that I can reach out to my friends and neighbors and show them the unspeakable blessing of knowing Jesus. Amen.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8 (NLT)

Recently I got a new camera for a trip we took to Disney World. We took hundreds of pictures to remember our trip by. When we got home we sat down to look at the pictures. Many of them were fantastic memories of our trip, but several of the pictures were a disappointment. Apparently the new camera I got had a slight design flaw. If you weren’t careful one of the dials could be switched and the focus of the pictures would become grainy or blurry. Several picture memories were ruined because the picture was out of focus.

There are software programs out there that can improve the lighting, the color and many other aspects of the picture. But if the focus is off, there is little that can be done. I learned the hard way to make sure that this camera had its dial on the correct settings before taking a picture!

Sometimes life can be like that. We get out of focus. It’s not dials that cause our problems. We play the ‘blame game’ and blame people, our past, our family, the injustice of the ‘so-called’ justice system, finances, politics, bad choices or even God for all the bad things that happen in our lives.

We get failure and adversity so ingrained in our thought processes that we lose sight of the many positive aspects of life. The circumstances of life aren’t what keep us in prison. It’s our reaction to the circumstances of life that hinders our ability to move forward. Fear, guilt, hate, anger, shame and unforgiveness keep us in bondage so that we can’t function. We go through life crippled by unhappiness and frustration.

The Apostle Paul gives us a cure for losing the focus on life. He tells the Philippians to keep their minds focused on the truth. There are some things in life that we will never change. Learn to accept them. There are other things we can change if we rely on God for the strength and wisdom to forge ahead.

We can’t always change the circumstances in our lives, but we can always change how we react to them. Start your day by forcing your mind to focus on the good things God has done for you. The fact that you can read this is a start! You are breathing! Jesus loves you even when you can’t feel it! If you are a Christ-follower you are forgiven and have eternity to look forward to. These are just a few things we can focus on. Train your mind to see the many works of God around you. Live a life of praise in the midst of adversity.

PRAYER: Dear Jesus. I admit to you that I can find plenty of people and things to blame for the pain I’m suffering right now. I’ve been attacked wrongfully. I’ve tried to follow you and failed. I’ve even questioned your Love and power. Sometimes I’ve wondered if you are even there! I ask that through the power of your Holy Spirit you would empower me to train my mind to focus on the true and honorable things in my life. Amen.

Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Colossians 3:1 (NLT)

What is the reality of Heaven? It’s more than a ‘pie in the sky’ response to life. The realities of Heaven start with us today and are a result of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It’s not about rules, or denominations or religious dogma.

When we talk about our relationship with Jesus Christ, or being a Christian or being a Christ-follower what things set us apart from any other social club?

  • We are forgiven: 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
  • We are equal: Romans 12:5- “so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”
  • We are Free to live: John 8:36- “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
  • We can call God our Daddy: Romans 8:15- “For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
  • We can live forever with Jesus: John 3:16-“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
  • Our Past doesn’t matter: 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

These are just a few of the many things that God has promised us in his Word as a result of our faith in Jesus Christ. Today focus on just one thing and praise God for His loving promises in our lives.

PRAYER: Dear Jesus. I am so thankful today for the many promises I have in you. I praise you for the fact that my life with you is based on relationship and not rules. I praise you today that even though I fail you on a daily basis you love me and care for me. Help me to focus on you today. Amen.

The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. John 10:10 (NLT)

A friend of mine tells the story of how his house was robbed in broad daylight. The thieves ‘let themselves in’ through his unlocked front door and took a television and stereo system from his front room! Now, you may ask, why did he leave his front door unlocked? The answer would be that he saw no need to lock the door when he was home!

My friend works out of his home office. On the day of the crime he was simply working away and heard a couple thumps. Thinking it was his dogs at play he thought nothing of it until he went to refill his coffee mug. It was at that time that he noticed two gaping holes in his entertainment center! Whoever the culprits were walked right in helped themselves and walked right back out again.

Just as a thief comes and steals from us when we least expect it, life can rob us of the life God intends for us to have. Jesus came to give us life! Rich, full and satisfying life. But that life can be stolen away from us. Anger, fear and our past can cripple our feelings about ourselves and others. Lack of spiritual relationship with Jesus and with fellow believers can leave us weak and searching for more meaning to life.

Sometimes we set goals for ourselves, or try to conform to how others expect us to act or perform. When that happens it’s easy to concentrate so much on what we can’t do that we fail to see what we have accomplished. We fail to see ourselves through God’s eyes.

Sin can also rob us from the full life that Jesus has for us. Feelings of guilt for past mistakes keep us tied to our past rather than being able to use those mistakes as stepping stones to success for the future. Our inability to forgive others for their sins against us, or the bitterness we endure when others refuse to forgive us for our mistakes also keep Christ’s joy from driving us.

My friend could have avoided the pain and embarrassment of being robbed by simply locking his front door. In the same way, each of us can avoid having the joy of Jesus stolen from us by giving our entire lives over to him for safe keeping. Don’t allow emotional thieves to steal what Jesus died to give us. Look to Him and the fact that He loves you so that you can live the full, refreshing life He intended you to have.

Jesus loves you passionately. He wants nothing more that to give you a rich, full and satisfying life. Why not turn your life over to Him today. He wants to protect you.

PRAYER: Jesus I thank you that you want nothing more than to give me a rich, full and satisfying life. As you know I’ve been robbed of this life by many things that have snuck into my life. I ask today that you would remove those things that keep me from you. Restore to me the joy of the Salvation you have given to me through your life, death and resurrection. In your name I pray, Amen.
