Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!”Lamentations‬ ‭3‬:‭21‬-‭24‬

Read through the book of Lamentations and you’ll see why the book gets its title. Lamentations, to lament, to live in despair and hopelessness.

Traditionally, the prophet Jeremiah is given credit for this book of poetry. It was written in a time of tremendous struggle for God’s people. They were under attack physically, politically and spiritually. It seemed as though God had either abandoned them completely or was unleashing his wrath on his people.

Yet, in the middle of this book there is an oasis so to speak. A refreshing reminder each of us can hold onto in perilous times. When the darkness is thick enough to cut with a knife; when it gets harder and harder to believe; when God seems angry, there is hope.

True hope, lasting hope has as its foundation, love. When the glitter and glitz of Christmas fades, when the turmoil in your heart seems too much to bear, remember these words of the prophet. No matter what struggle you find yourself in, God’s love for you is new every morning. Read that again. Every. Single. Morning.

You may have the dust from yesterday’s worries still on your shoes, but not God. Today is a new day. Today is a new day of love. Today is a day when you can remember there is hope. And if things are hard today? Tomorrow is another new day of hope because his love endures forever.

So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus. ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭7‬

Have you ever completed a project, then stood back to admire your work? It came out exactly as you’d hoped. You smile and look to share your accomplishment with someone else? Perhaps not!

The perfectionist in us always see a flaw or think of how it could be better. The pessimist not only fails to celebrate the accomplishment, but finds ways to hide it from others. The insecure may feel like showing it to others may risk having the flaws pointed out or be accused of pride.

Those who are confident are willing to take the risk because they know this project is exactly what it needs to be. It’s a hard but wonderful reality to realize that God shows us off as his perfect creation. Before time began he had an idea for the you you are.

Oh, it may have been a rough road at times. You may have failed, rebelled, doubted or become apathetic, but that doesn’t take away from the you he sees.

We tend to look in the mirror and see the you that struggles with life issues. But not God. When he sees the ‘you’ he sees a masterpiece. When He looks at the ‘you’ you are, he sees the potential, he sees someone Jesus died for, he sees…someone to be proud of.

Imagine God shouting from the street corner how wonderful the ‘you’ is! And it’s all because of Jesus, not the ‘you’ you

Let my soul be at rest again, for the Lord has been good to me. Psalms‬ ‭116‬:‭7‬

We carry a variety of burdens every day. Physical burdens of exhaustion, sore muscles, illness, or the inevitable ‘old age.’

The emotional burdens we carry are legion. Relationships that are difficult. Our kids make choices we never raised them to make. The rising cost of living seems out of control. Politicians talk about solutions but never act on them. Our minds never seem to stop reminding us of all the struggles we have.

Spiritually, we struggle with doubt. We struggle to understand. We struggle to pray and read as we know we should. We struggle to have the desire to spend time with God. We never seem to be able to fill this void in our lives that leads to true happiness and fulfillment. We long for rest, but it seems just out of reach like the gold ring on some maniacal carousel.

Jesus calls us to rest in him in the midst of our struggle. In Matthew 11:29 he calls us to “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Sometimes the best rest we can have is worship.

True Worship draws us into rest at every level (physical, spiritual, emotional/mental). Jesus is humble and humble people don’t judge. Jesus is gentle and gentle people understand and aren’t critical.

When we focus on worship, the distractions can become less as we rest on the promises, presence and peace of Jesus.

Then I will sing praises to your name forever as I fulfill my vows each day. Psalms‬ ‭61‬:‭8

Music has the amazing way to both express our moods and change our moods. Have you ever noticed that? How many songs have been written due to grief or broken relationships or shattered dreams. If the performer does the song well, you can feel your heart melt along with theirs over whatever tragedy the message sends.

On the other hand, a song that expresses joy can make your heart sing as well. I remember back when I was young, when my favorite song came on the car radio in the summer, the windows went down and the volume went up!

David begins this Psalm (song) in dire straights we know little about. All we know for sure is that he’s struggling. But as his song moves on there is a gradual progression from distress to praise; from fear to courage; from questioning God to worshipping God.

What was the difference? We don’t know for sure but I’m convinced his physical situation hadn’t changed. What changed was his heart. His focus turned from his problems to his God.

How is the condition of your heart today? The mind plays amazing games with us. The songs you listen to have a profound and secret affect on your mindset.

So when you are unsure if God hears your prayers, if you are struggling with the news and events around you let me suggest you listen to some good praise music. Allow the words of praise music to permeate your mind, work to change your mood and turn your focus towards the promises of our almighty, loving and never failing Father God. His music will do your heart good!
